Tips for Leading Young Adults

If you don't have much experience leading young adults don't worry . Just follow these eleven tips for effective Bible studies.

1.Enjoy yourself. Leading a Bible study is a great way to enjoy personal Bible study even more.

2.Enjoy your group. Young adults are fun and challenging to hang out with. They have energy, intelligence, openness, and questions. They're making crucial choices in life. They can be challenged to serve God with vigor. What a privilege to minister to and with young adults!

3.Don't call them young adults to their faces. You can call the young adult group, although with some creativity you'd probably discover a better title.

4.Concentrate on relationships before content. Get to know the people. Be involved in their lives beyond the classroom. Good relationships lead to better Bible study, since people will open up and be honest when they've developed relationships.

5.Remember that all adults aren't good readers. Some are as embarrassed to read aloud as they were as kids when their teachers called on them. Always ask for volunteers when you want something read aloud.

6. Emphasize group participation. See yourself as the guide, not the almighty instructor delivering the equivalent of the ten commandments. Use a light touch so participants will respond openly.

7.Create an environment for sharing. For discussions sit in a circle so people can see one another. Have coffee and snacks to add to the informality.

8.Include everyone. Be sure some people don't dominate the discussion when others have something to say. Make sure everyone has a Bible and other materials needed for the study.

9.Affirm them. Thank those who share ideas-even if you thought the idea was a loser. Encourage and support group members as they ask questions and apply what they are learning to their lives.

10.Don't expect too much too soon. If the group hasn't had much experience in participatory Bible study, it might take time for them to feel comfortable sharing. Stay with them. Encourage them to gradually open up.

11.Pray.Immerse your preparation and leadership in prayer. Pray for the participants in your group. And pray that the study will help people grow in their faith.
